Leafs Prospect Ty Voit Reveals Objective Following a Nightmare Rookie Season as a Pro
After an injury-filled first pro season, former fifth-round pick Ty Voit wants to show Maple Leafs fans what he can bring to the organization.
After suffering a shoulder injury during the Traverse City Prospect Tournament last year, Voit missed the first two and an half months of the Toronto Marlies' season before returning in mid-December. What was supposed to be an exciting moment for the 21-year-old quickly turned into a disaster when he fell awkwardly into the boards and tore his labrum just minutes into the game.
As Voit and other Leaf rookies geared up for a pair of games against Habs rookies this weekend, Voit made it clear what his goal is for this season.
"I think I took [the injury] pretty hard right off the start but I had a lot of great people in my ear up here and the months that go by, I'm almost more fired up to get back in it," Voit said. "Now that I'm moving I kind of just want to reestablish myself and just show what I can do."
The former Sarnia Sting product showed a glimpse of what he can do, registering 8 points with the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL just prior to joining the Marlies last season. On top of a brief and successful stint with the Growlers, Voit finished with 24 goals and 105 points in 67 games during his final season with the Sting in the OHL.
Originally considered a steal in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Voit's health will be front and center this season as he looks to re-establish himself as one of the top prospects in the Leafs' system.
