Joseph Woll has played the Leafs' last three games, and has won his last four starts. It was always expected that Woll would get a rest tonight, but it was never clear who would play between Matt Murray and Dennis Hildeby until this morning.
Without Anthony Stolarz, who underwent knee surgery in December, Woll has had to rely on getting some help from Murray and Hildeby.
Unfortunately, both Murray and Hildeby have looked a little rough in their most recent starts, with Murray being sent down following his last game, a 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals, and a poor performance at that.
On Sunday morning with no game-day skate, Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed that Woll would be getting the night off in favour of Dennis Hildeby, which gives us some insight as to who is ahead in the pecking order at the moment between he and the veteran, Murray.
The 23-year-old Swede has put up very respectable numbers with the Marlies going 4-2-2 with a 2.42 GAA and .916 save percentage.
In three starts with the Leafs, Hildeby is 2-1-0, but has posted an atrocious .875 save percentage and 3.68 GAA, both of which he will look to improve on Sunday night when he tends the net against the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Leafs will be without Stolarz for approximately another month, and need both Murray and Hildeby to be better to avoid forcing the Leafs to overuse Woll, who also has a lengthy injury history.
