When Auston Matthews was named Captain of the Leafs, Brad Treliving mentioned in his interviews after that he was continuing to look at ways to improve the roster heading into training camp. His latest move comes via a PTO, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, who revealed this afternoon that the Leafs are going to sign former Florida Panthers forward and Stanley Cup champion Steven Lorentz.
A seventh-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2015, Lorentz made his NHL debut during the 2020-2021 season with Carolina. The 6'4 forward was traded to the Panthers ahead of last season from the San Jose Sharks where he skated in 38 regular season games and 16 playoff games. Lorentz, 28, brings some speed, physicality and needed size to the Leafs' bottom-six as well as some roster flexibility as he can play center or the wing.
Through 230 career games in the NHL, Lorentz has amassed 21 goals and 43 points with Carolina, San Jose and Florida.
