Fraser Minten was injured this past week with the 2024 Prospects Showcase in Montreal, leaving his status up in the air for Maple Leafs training camp. Today, it was confirmed that he will indeed miss time with what the team is calling a high-ankle sprain. Minten's injury occurred during the second game of the weekend series when he was pushed awkwardly into the boards by David Reinbacher on a forecheck.
In addition to the news regarding Minten, Leafs GM Brad Treliving also reported that Connor Dewar underwent off-season shoulder surgery in May and is still currently rehabbing from it. He is expected to miss at least the start of camp.
Ben Danford is another Leaf who may not participate in camp after he was injured during a scrimmage last week after colliding with Marshall Finnie ahead of the Leafs' two-game series against Montreal Canadiens prospects. He is out with a concussion and no timetable has been given for his return.
Hopefully, Danford is able to join at some point during training camp, but it would seem that both Dewar and Minten will begin the season on injured reserve. The timing couldn't have been worse for Minten as he had a real opportunity to crack the Leafs' opening night roster, especially with Dewar still recovering. Danford on the other hand, was not expected to challenge for a roster spot, but would have gained some valuable experience being able to participate in a full camp.
Ryan Tverberg rounds out the group of the 4 injured Leafs and appears to be the closest to returning.
Not an ideal start to training camp, but there's still expected to be plenty of competition throughout the next few weeks.
