On Friday morning, the NHL and sports community received the tragic news that Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau passed away after being struck by a drunk driver Thursday evening. As tributes poured in and fans set up memorials at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary and Nationwide Arena in Columbus, a Go Fund Me page was set up for Matthew's wife, Madeline, and their unborn son, Tripp.
The donations have poured in for Matthew's wife and son with the total sitting at slightly less than $275K at the time of this article. With how close Johnny and Matthew were, surely Johnny was going to make sure baby Tripp was taken care of, but the money raised will help the family in the interim. Teammates of the brothers, as well as past and present players and NHL personnel have made donations, including Leafs GM Brad Treliving.
Treliving chose to honour Gaudreau with his $1313 donation, paying tribute to the #13 he has worn throughout his impressive NHL career.
After a truly tragic incident, the hockey community has shown once again why it is the best with fans that normally despise each other coming together to show their support for the family during this very difficult time.
If you would like to contribute and support Madeline Gaudreau and her unborn son in honour of Johnny and Matthew, the link to do so is below. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Gaudreau family, their friends and teammates at this unfathomable time.
