At the conclusion of the NHL entry draft a couple of weeks ago, new Leafs head coach Craig Berube commented on the situation surrounding Mitch Marner. He said he was looking forward to coaching him next season, with many people taking that as confirmation that Marner will indeed return to the Leafs and the team will 'run it back' once again.
In speaking with The Star's Kevin McGran, Berube was asked about Marner. His answer was short, but he doubled down on his comments from the draft, confirming that Marner is here to stay - at least for now.
While there has been no confirmation from Brad Treliving on Marner, one thing many have noticed is that last off-season he pushed the narrative that signing Auston Matthews and William Nylander to extensions were priority number one. He has not said anything to that extent about Marner, leading many to speculate he is, in fact, available.
Berube also touched on his initial meeting with Marner and how it went viral on social media.
Berube is known to demand a lot from his players and is an old-school type of coach, so it will be an intriguing storyline to follow as to how he deploys Marner as well as Matthews and Nylander.
