Last fall, Minten defied the odds and actually made the Maple Leafs out of training camp as a 19-year-old. In order to open up a roster spot for the young rookie, the Leafs dealt veteran Sam Lafferty to the Vancouver Canucks, which showed how much confidence the Leafs had in the WHL star.
Unfortunately for Minten, his stay with the big club was a brief one, making his way into only 4 games under Sheldon Keefe before being sent back to the Kamloops Blazers to continue his junior career.
Coming into this season, Minten is much bigger, stronger and more mature than he was at this point last year, which bodes well for his bid to make the big club again. The one thing he won't bring to camp is an ego. The 20-year-old pivot revealed in an interview this week that he's re-reading one of his favourite books, entitled "Ego is the Enemy", by Ryan Holiday. Minten says the book helps him to remember that it's a process and that nothing entitles him to be able to jump the line.
Minten also spoke about how, rather than having an ego, he has really leaned on his inner confidence that he has built up through the work and the effort that has made him feel like he can compete for a roster spot this season.
This type of maturity and commitment is why the Leafs moved back in 2022 to select Minten with the 38th overall pick in the draft. It's the mindset that's going to help him succeed over the long haul, and if he does make this year's team once again, it will be because of his attitude, his work ethic and because he has truly earned it.
