Last week, Leafs head coach Craig Berube outlined the plan for Hakanpaa to join the main group if he had recovered enough from a nagging knee injury that caused significant concern and delayed his contract signing with the Leafs. Hakanpaa had been skating in the development group at training camp and today made his debut with the main group sporting a regular white jersey, indicating that he is healthy enough to get into some game action before the regular season begins.
Connor Dewar joined the main group today in a white jersey after skating in a non-contact jersey for the past week. Dewar had off-season shoulder surgery and was expected to miss most of camp so it is good news for the Leafs that he returned now to get a couple of pre-season games in.
The Leafs also got good news on John Tavares and Calle Jarnkrok who have been dealing with lower-body injuries the past few days as both returned to practice and again, neither were wearing non-contact jerseys.
With the Leafs having an overwhelming number of forwards and defensemen still in camp, many are expecting GM Brad Treliving to make some sort of trade and announce some roster cuts before their final pre-season game this weekend. The Leafs are currently $1.069M over the salary cap so there will certainly be some surprising names being traded or waived now that all four are healthy to create the necessary cap space ahead of the season opener on October 9th against the Montreal Canadiens.
