According to one insider, the Maple Leafs reportedly have a multi-year extension in place with pending UFA forward and former captain John Tavares.
Both John Tavares and Mitch Marner have been eligible to sign extensions with the Maple Leafs since July 1st. However, things have remained relatively quiet to the public, with the most recent report indicating that there have been discussions throughout the season between the Leafs and agents for Tavares and Marner.
The 34-year-old Tavares and 27-year-old Marner have continuously expressed their desires to remain Maple Leafs. Now, having them both locked up long-term may be closer than expected.
»Tavares, like Marner, also needs a new contract. There has been chatter of a three-year extension in place that requires some finetuning, but nobody will confirm. His AAV will drop, likely in the $7 million range," wrote Pagnotta.
While the cap-hit is a tad higher than the reported $6M that many expected, Tavares is also having somewhat of a resurgence for the Maple Leafs this season.
Despite missing 7 games with injury, the former first-overall pick has tallied 21 goals and 45 points in 47 games while averaging a shade over 18 minutes per game.
With the salary cap jumping drastically over the next few seasons, the reported ~$4M in savings will look like much more of a bargain than some may think - especially if he can continue on with his ability to seemingly produce 20-plus goals each and every season.
