Deflating losses to the Columbus Blue Jackets and St-Louis Blues this week have the Leafs reeling and fans noticing the 'same old Leafs' are back. One major difference after the two losses, however, is the accountability most of the Leafs are taking. Following Tuesday's loss, John Tavares noted that he needed to be better and get back to where he was prior to his illness. Auston Matthews and William Nylander also called themselves out after a disappointing effort on Thursday against Craig Berube's former team. Both took a good, hard look in the mirror and Nylander even admitted he made a 'stupid' play that led to one of the Blues' goals.
Not only have Matthews, Nylander and Tavares held themselves accountable and recognize they have to be better, but Berube also also shared a similar sentiment.
While three of the Leafs' stars and their coach have taken responsibility for the Leafs' recent struggles, Marner continues to fall into his old ways. In speaking with media following practice on Friday, Marner was asked about the team's struggles. Every answer he gave began with 'we' and there was nothing from him that indicated he was taking responsibility himself.
Although Marner is tied for the team lead in points with Nylander with seven, the pending UFA has just 1 goal in 8 games and has just 2 points in his last five games. For someone looking to secure a long-term extension with the Leafs, not taking accountability for his part in the Leafs' recent struggles likely doesn't bode well for his future in Toronto. There is lots of season left for that to change, but as of right now, Marner appears to be the only one of the 'Core Four' not shouldering any of the blame for the troubling start himself.
