The Maple Leafs signed Ryan Reaves last summer to a three-year deal worth $1.35 million per season. The goal in signing Reaves was to make the team tougher to play against by having him stand up for his teammates and ensure the opposing team would not cross any lines.
Reaves has largely fulfilled his role during his tenure with the Leafs thus far, despite some mixed results from fans regarding the contract. Although he fought less frequently last season, Reavo's presence on the ice has made the Maple Leafs less of a target for opposing players.
Reaves is still considered one of the toughest players in the NHL, as noted by NHL Network analyst Stu "The Grim Reaper" Grimson.
Grimson, who put up more than 2100 penalty minutes in his career, regards Reaves as one of outright top tough guy, ranking #1 on his list.
Last season, Reaves and fellow enforcer Nicolas Deslauriers of the Philadelphia Flyers, who is ranked 3rd on Grimson's list, had a notable heavyweight tilt:
While Reaves is not known for his offensive skills, he still chipped in where he could, recording six points in 49 games during the 2023-24 season. Everyone knows, though, that Reaves is not in Toronto to score goals; he's there for his toughness, big hits, and positive locker room vibes, which is something the Maple Leafs have embraced.
