Max Domi reveals something very interesting about his pre-Maple Leafs career
After Max Domi re-signed for four more seasons with the Leafs, he explained the real reason for all of his recent short-term contracts.
The Toronto Maple Leafs and GM Brad Treliving ultimately had to choose between Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi, ultimately electing for the more versatile Domi at a very reasonable $3.75M per season for the next four years. Domi announced his return with a now viral video and was asked about the video and staying in Toronto long-term by TSN's Mark Masters earlier this week.
"I've had that idea for a while. It's tough to throw that video out when you're on a new team every year (smile) so first time I've gotten the stability I've been looking for," said Domi before revealing that he purposely bounced around the league waiting for an opportunity to open up in Toronto.
"Part of that, of me bouncing around, was always trying to end up here, & was lucky enough to get the opportunity last year & had a great time, enjoyed every second of last year."
Since his entry-level contract expired, Domi's last four contracts have been one or two years, including his deal with the Leafs last season. The media was unaware of the real reasoning behind those short-term deals and cited that he could never find a good fit, but in reality, he knew he always wanted to be a Leaf.
Domi was also asked about spending time at this stage of his career with the team where his dad Tie Domi was a fan-favourite and built a legacy.
"Carrying on that legacy that he started & created is something that means a lot to me ... I was prepared to do whatever it took to make this thing work & really excited ... Wearing that jersey is a huge privilege. I had a dream of winning a Stanley Cup from as long as I can remember, whenever I started playing hockey, & long before I knew anything about cashing a paycheque. That dream hasn't changed, and whenever I had that dream I was always wearing a Leafs jersey. I chose to be here. I want to be here. I believe in this group."
After a slow start last season, Domi had a very good second half, finishing with 9 goals, 47 points and 118 penalty minutes in 80 games. He can play the wing and center and also noted that he is looking forward to playing for new Leafs head coach Craig Berube.
