Marner has found his name attached to several juicy rumours this summer, but as we pass the midway point of August, it has become very clear that the Core 4 will be back for at least one more kick at the can, Marner included.
When Craig Berube was hired by the Maple Leafs back in May, he was adamant that he wanted to meet and spend time with as many of the players as he could this summer. One of his first meetings occurred with Marner. The pair met at an Etobicoke coffee shop, where they were photographed by a fan who also happened to be at the establishment.
Berube had addressed the paparazzi-esque photo back in June at the NHL Draft, stating that he wasn't surprised with the turn of events. He also claimed to have forgotten all about it by that point in time.
Marner, however, wasn't asked about the photo until just this week following Matthews' captaincy ceremony in Toronto. Surprisingly, Marner actually found humour in it.
While Marner and Berube have both expressed a mutual interest in working with one another, it will be interesting to see how the dynamic will work in-season. Berube, a notoriously demanding coach, has a reputation of being very direct. Marner has a reputation for being a touch on the sensitive side, so we'll see how they actually work together once they can no longer just offseason niceties.
