During the first period, as Robertson and Nylander were skating the same route on the backcheck, Robertson gave his linemate a little push to try to help him catch his man. Unfortunately, the result of the play was a tough one, leaving Nylander shaken up and in some need of attention from the Leafs' trainer.
Nylander fell awkwardly after the Robertson stick push, resulting in him colliding head-first with a Montreal player's knee. A bizarre, freak accident led to Nylander immediately being taken out of the game for precautionary reasons. He didn't return.
Following the game, Robertson was quick to address the elephant in the room, stating his intentions on the play. Former Leafs captain John Tavares also chimed in that the players had been told that Nylander was actually doing well.
It's the last thing Leafs Nation needed to see or hear. First, Fraser Minten's promising start to camp ends short with a high ankle sprain. Then Calle Jarnkrok got hurt, then Auston Matthews suffered an undisclosed upper-body injury, and now this freak accident involving Nylander.
Fortunately, according to Craig Berube himself, Nylander is alright and appears to have avoided the worst of it.
Perhaps the hockey gods are finally showing the Leafs some mercy. We'll find out in the coming days if anything changes. At least for now, Nylander is fine. No need to hit the panic button just yet.
