He's only played five games in the NHL so far, but Maple Leafs rookie Nikita Grebenkin is quickly becoming a fan favourite for his hilarious post-game interviews and quirky personality.
His original call-up to the NHL was an unexpected game-day decision, with a lot of fans not knowing much about the 2022 fifth-round draft pick.
Fans have learned about him quickly, though, as Grebenkin loves to interact with the fans and the media and just seems like a very down-to-earth, happy person who is soaking up every bit ot his opportunity in the spotlight.
One of his first interviews in the NHL went viral for his hilarious, "Team speak me: backcheck, forecheck and paycheque" line, before bursting out into infectious laughter.
Next, it was an impromptu interview on the street with Fan First Network back at the end of November, where Grebenkin discussed being new to the city of Toronto.
Now, Nikita Grebenkin is back with another funny interview that took place following last night's win 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
He also noted it was great that "Papi's back," referring to the return of Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews, who opened the scoring, and who also got into it with an NHL referee over a weak penalty call in last night's win over Chicago.
Hockey interviews can be very stale at times with players showing little emotion. Nikita Grebenkin is a breath of fresh air in comparison to that. It's no wonder fans love him.
Grebenkin has five games under his belt in the NHL so far. While he's failed to hit the scoresheet, his teammates love him for his take no prisoners attitude and willingness to get into the dirty areas.
Grebenkin just might turn into an unexpected star for the Toronto Maple Leafs for his actions on and off the ice.
