"Toronto Maple Leafs' general manager Kyle Dubas had a heavy year of work ahead of him last year. It started with the William Nylander contract and was followed up with the Auston Matthews contract. That Matthews contract shocked lots of people because it wasn't a bridge deal and wasn't a max term extension, instead it was a five year deal that will lead him into free agency at the ripe age of 25 years old, something that not many franchise type players get to experience. The Mitch Marner contract situation has yet to be solved just like many other RFA situations across the NHL and apparently the Matthews contract has plenty to do with it. Pierre LeBrun reports that NHL GM's are upset with Dubas for setting a precedent with that five year deal. «80% of are stuck on term… If you want to talk about why teams are mad at Toronto, they hate the five-year precedent. They either want to go long or short, but not five.
I think the Marner one is not on term. The two sides have talked about a bunch of different years and both sides would do a three-year deal. But we know why they haven't signed: They can't agree on money.»
