The Leafs have a ton of cap space next off-season, which led to one podcast proposing a massive change to the lineup involving Mitch Marner.

The Leafs and Marner are currently in on-going discussions regarding an extension, which was confirmed by Marner and later confirmed by his agent, Darren Ferris.

That hasn't stopped the speculation of a massive change for the winger and Leafs next off-season, even though we are just two games into the regular season. On Thursday's episode of the 'What Chaos!' podcast, hosts Pete Blackburn and DJ Bean proposed a wild scenario for next off-season involving the 27-year-old.

"The Leafs have $26.28M in cap space next season and what if they just do a let Marner go and sign Igor Shesterkin? It would be madness. I said it with the Bruins this year with what they did. You lose Ulmark, you lose DeBrusk, but you make moves that make yourself a better post-season team. If you did some sort of shuffling like that where you peel off Marner and get Shesterkin on what would probably be an absolutely bonkers contract, but if you're keeping Marner, you're giving him a bonkers contract too. So, if you give that money to a goalie instead of to an awesome wing, Leafs could have a stew going," said Bean.

Given the fact that Leafs have Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll signed together for this season and next, they would have to move one of them and have a definitive answer on Marner's future before they could even consider taking a run at Igor Shesterkin, assuming the Rangers don't sign him. On top of that, the Leafs would have to be certain that Shesterkin would even want to sign with the Leafs, which, as Blackburn noted, would be hard to see given that many believe Shesterkin will eventually re-sign with the New York Rangers.

The Leafs have not had a stable, 'go-to' goaltender for years and landing one of the game's best would make them better instantly, particularly in the playoffs, where they have struggled to get the timely save needed to advance.

A pipe dream? Maybe. But, we've seen some pretty wild developments in the NHL and even if the possibility is near-zero, until Shesterkin signs, anything is possible.
