Popular advanced stat website Evolving Hockey has projected an extension for Marner at 8 years and $11.2M per season. That sounds like a bargain considering it is only a $300K raise from his current $10.9M AAV.
Unfortunately, Marner's extension number will come in much higher than that. On TSN's 'First Up' yesterday, former Leaf Carlo Colaiacovo explained how Marner's new contract is going to be a deterrent for teams interested in acquiring him and what he could look for on his next deal. He puts the Marner deal above $11.5M per season.
The Leafs, or any team for that matter, will have to weigh their options and determine if Marner is worth spending $13M per season on. For Leaf fans, that is an easy 'no' right now.
Whether the Leafs sign him to an extension, trade him, or let him walk in free agency, until a decision is made one way or another, Marner will continue to be a hot topic for the media. With the draft and free agency just around the corner, we could have clarification in the coming weeks as to what the Leafs' intentions are with Marner.
