Brendan Shanahan may be ousted as President of Hockey Ops in Toronto solely due to the fact MLSE sees his role as redundant after hiring of Keith Pelley according to Elliotte Friedman.

Brendan Shanahan is entering the final year of a six-year contract that has seen him make some questionable decisions as the President of Hockey Operations of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Although the Leafs have continuously failed under him, winning just one playoff series in eight years, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed on this morning's '32 Thoughts' that Shanahan may be let go for a reason that has nothing to do with the Leafs success or lack thereof.

Shanahan decision to come soon according to Friedman

"Shanahan, the heat is on. This is going to be Pelley's decision. The question here is how much time does Pelley need to make the call. Is he keeping him or is he moving on I don't necessarily believe they (MLSE) want a president of hockey operations anymore and it's possible that layer is eliminated and not replaced."

Keith Pelley officially joined the Leafs at the beginning of April and while he has remained out of the spotlight since joining, he is now in it given that he has a difficult and possibly controversial decision to make in the coming days and/or weeks. While it wouldn't be a surprise to see Shanahan relieved of his duties, the primary reason having nothing to do with his performance would be even more shocking.
