It didn't take long for the first trade of day two of the draft, and it was a doozy. The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded one of their top defensemen, Mikhail Sergachev, in exchange for prospects Conor Geekie, JJ Moser, and a pair of draft picks. The Bolts have acquired a 2025 2nd round pick (TOR), and pick #199 in this year's draft.
Sergachev is just 1 year into an 8-year extension that he had signed back in July of 2022, which carries an $8.5M cap hit.
The former Canadiens draft pick broke out in 2022-23, recording 10 goals and 64 points in 79 games. Unfortunately, he was unable to follow it up with another big year, as injury issues limited him to just 34 games last season, though he did manage to notch 19 points over that span.
In Connor Geekie, the Lightning are getting a dynamic scoring forward who was selected 11th overall in 2022. The 6'4, 197-pound center certainly helps the organization up front, especially if Steven Stamkos does head to the free agent market on Monday, as expected.
Utah has also traded for New Jersey Devils defenseman John Marino.
