Team confirms sad news regarding the passing of a Leafs legend

Sad news to report in the hockey world as the Toronto Maple Leafs confirm the passing of Leafs legend and Stanley Cup champion Ron Ellis. He was 79 years of age.

Ellis played his entire career with the Maple Leafs, helping the franchise to its most recent Stanley Cup in 1967, tallying two goals and an assist in 12 postseason games that year.

Ellis played over 1,034 regular season games with the blue and white. He is fifth all-time in goals scored by a Maple Leaf with 332 and seventh all-time with 640 points.

The Lindsay, Ontario native was a key member of Team Canada's 1972 Summit Series against the USSR, registering three assists. After his playing career ended, Ellis spent many years working for the Hockey Hall of Fame as the director of public affairs and assistant to the president.

Ellis was open was about his mental health struggles, writing a book after retirement titled «Over The Boards: The Ron Ellis Story.» After releasing his book he would become a speaker on mental health issues.

In February of this year, Ellis was awarded the 'Keith Magnuson Man of the Year' Award for all the work he does for his community and representing the hockey world in a positive light.
