As the hockey community unites to grieve the loss of former Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets winger Johnny Gaudreau, the news is hitting a little harder for some than others.
Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, were struck by a drunk driver while cycling on Thursday evening, with both ultimately succumbing to their injuries. Since learning the news this morning, fans have created shrines outside of Nationwide Arena and Scotiabank Saddledome to honour Johnny's memory.
One video that has made the rounds on Friday is the Sean Monahan interview with the "What Chaos Show". Monahan had signed a deal with the Blue Jackets as a free agent this summer and was elated to be reuniting with Gaudreau, his best friend. The interview has left people with heavy hearts and tears today.
Watching Monahan beam with excitement over having the opportunity to play with his friend again and watch their kids grow up together was absolutely heartbreaking, given the circumstances surrounding today's horrible announcement.
Our hearts go out to Monahan, along with the rest of Johnny and Matthew's friends, family and teammates. Just unfathomable, this news.
