According to a report from NHL Insider Chris Johnston, Toronto native Jeff Skinner rejected a contract offer with the Maple Leafs on July 1st to sign in Edmonton.

Johnston revealed on The Chris Johnston Show that the Leafs were among the potential suitors for Skinner on Monday, but even with an enticing offer on the table to play with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, Skinner opted to join the Oilers instead.

''Leafs talked to Jeff Skinner, pitched him on the idea of playing next to Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, ultimately he chose Edmonton.''

The Oilers signed Jeff Skinner to a 1 year deal, at a 3M AAV on the opening day of free agency, just one week after the Oilers were eliminated in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Florida Panthers in a tightly contested Game 7.

The former Buffalo Sabres forward is coming off of a down year in 2023-24, at least for his standards, as he put up 24 goals and 46 points, in 74 games. He had amassed 82 points in 79 gamed just one year prior.

Even though Skinner turned down an extraordinary opportunity with the Leafs, turning down the chance to play with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl would have been equally difficult, I suppose.
