"We've heard for a couple of weeks now how the Toronto Maple Leafs and general manager Kyle Dubas are trying to move a defenseman. Travis Dermott and Justin Holl are the names that Dubas has been trying to dangle across the league. The Leafs' GM hasn't found a taker yet but he might be close with an old friend. According to Islanders' insider Arthur Staple of The Athletic, the Isles' and general manager Lou Lamoriello could have interest in acquiring Dermott now with their new found cap space. Lamoriello was able to ship Johnny Boychuk's contract off to Buffalo to create some cap space which would welcome Dermott. "Dermott, who was drafted by the Leafs right before Lamoriello came on board, is still in the Toronto lineup but could be had for the right price. He's a serviceable left-handed defenseman, and he's cheap enough to fit under the cap right now for the newly cap-flexible Islanders, who did themselves and the Sabres a favor by sending Johnny Boychuk's contract to Buffalo last week.
If you need a second- or third-round pick to acquire Dermott, that still leaves the Isles' first for something bigger down the road. But the asset list gets shorter and the Isles might need as much in stock as possible to get something they may need in March."Would you move Dermott for a 2nd round pick? The Leafs currently only have a 1st and 2nd round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft."
