With the Toronto Maple Leafs up 1-0, Auston Matthews had the puck behind the net and while attempting to shield it with his body, he was essentially bear hugged to the ice my Bruins defenceman Charlie McAvoy. There was no call on the play and the play eventually went back to the Leafs' zone.
While in the Leafs' zone, Brad Marchand and Tyler Bertuzzi renewed their love for each other in the corner, both taking a shot at one other. The battle continued as the puck exited the zone as they took each other down before crossing the blueline and then Marchand slashed the feet of Bertuzzi as they crossed the blueline in what should have been a clear retaliation call.
With all of that going on and the fans going crazy, Trent Frederic skated into the zone and beat an unsuspecting Ilya Samsonov short-side to tie the game at 1-1. Bertuzzi was livid with the lack of a call.
Perhaps the referees should have nabbed both Bertuzzi and Marchand, but to not AT LEAST call the Marchand retaliation penalty was a pretty embarrassing display of officiating.
Once again, NHL officials have found a way to screw the Leafs and take away all the momentum they gained from the Matthew Knies goal. It will be interesting to see how far the line is pushed either way and if the Leafs are able to get away with the same types of plays.
