Although the Leafs signed Max Domi to a 4-year extension yesterday afternoon, TSN's Darren Dreger reported that the Leafs and Bertuzzi continued to discuss an extension as well. As it turns out, Dreger has given Leafs fans false hope.
Dreger reported on Sunday evening that Bertuzzi's ask was too rich for the Leafs, even though reports indicated that he was willing to work with the club on both term and dollars to remain in Toronto. Dreger also indicated that Bertuzzi will land a deal in the four-year, $5M AAV range.
Bertuzzi skated in 80 games last season for the Leafs registering 21 goals and 43 points. He also added 4 points in 7 playoff games. In his short time with the Leafs he became a fan-favourite thanks to the sandpaper and snot' he provided in the top-six. While it appears Bertuzzi will be moving on, there is always the possibility the two sides reconnect in a few days after he tests the market.
