Veteran Goalie May Be the Answer in Goal for Maple Leafs in Anthony Stolarz's Absence
Veteran goalie Matt Murray may be the answer in net for the Maple Leafs down the stretch amid Anthony Stolarz injury.
As the Toronto Maple Leafs prepare for a stretch without early Vezina Trophy candidate Anthony Stolarz, who is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to injury, it's time for the team to assess their short-term goaltending dilemma.
Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving recently addressed whether Matt Murray could be a viable option in net during this time.
As per Leafslatest on X:
''Absolutely. As I said, when I refer to the depth, it's not just one guy, right? We have three guys who have been playing well down there. Dennis had a tremendous year last year and played well during his time up here. It's why we got Matt, too, right? Now, [Murray] was dealing with a little bit of an injury, but touch wood, we anticipate that he is going to get in the net tomorrow in Wilkes-Barre. We'll go from there.''
Dennis Hildeby is currently up with the NHL team, but his stay may not be a long one. Murray brings veteran leadership and valuable NHL and playoff experience to the table that Hildeby just doesn't have yet.
Murray's waiver status is also a positive factor, as pointed out by LeafsUpdates21 on X:
''I think this would be the way to go. Hildeby clearly needs more time in the AHL.
Murray cleared waivers in October and has 30 days/10 games on the NHL roster before he needs to clear again.''
The primary concern with Murray is his health, as he was injured again a few weeks ago. However, it appears his condition is improving, and he could return to action in the AHL this week.
If Hildeby struggles in the coming weeks in his NHL stint, don't be surprised if Murray is called up and takes the reins. After all, he is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with loads of experience.
