On a night when the Toronto Maple Leafs had a golden opportunity to extend their active winning streak to 4 games against an inferior opponent in the Ottawa Senators, the Buds came out and laid a complete egg in an embarrassing effort on home ice.
During the 3-0 loss, Leafs bench boss Craig Berube made it very clear what he thought of his team's effort when he expressed his anger and frustration outwardly, shouting at his players and flashing them stern looks in an attempt to snap the team out of their sleepy performance against a very beatable Sens team.
Following the game, William Nylander was among those who spoke with the media. When asked about the profanity-laced rant from Berube on the bench, surprisingly, Nylander had a very positive reaction to it.
If a wake-up call was what Berube was after, his players didn't get the memo. The Leafs couldn't sneak even one of their 27 shots past Linus Ullmark and allowed the Sens to fire 41 pucks at Anthony Stolarz, completely hanging their goaltender out to dry on home ice at Scotiabank Arena.
The Leafs traveled to Washington after last night's loss, and will take on the Capitals tonight in the second half of a back-to-back, so there's no time to dwell on their poor performance on Tuesday. Now, it's about recognizing that they can't change what happened yesterday, they can only put their heads down and work harder today to ensure that it doesn't happen again tonight against the Caps.
