Heartbreaking news shared by former Maple Leaf Jason Spezza
Following the announcement that NHL legend Lanny McDonald suffered a cardiac event that led to his hospitalization, it was already a heavy news day in the hockey world. Now, another NHL alumnus has come forward to reveal a tragedy that has struck his family. Former Maple Leaf Jason Spezza has issued a statement on behalf of himself and his family today, regarding the tragic and unexpected passing of his brother, Matt.
Spezza's younger brother Matthew had passed away over the weekend due to an accidental overdose. Anyone who has had experienced in dealing with a loved one dealing with addiction will know right away how difficult it can be and that people don't always get the help they need in time.
Obviously, the Spezza family is broken. Death is something that is extremely difficult to process, regardless of the circumstances. It's even more difficult when it's sudden and unexpected and takes someone far too young.
The Spezza family will be in mourning with a heavy heart, as they look to find comfort in one another. They are asking for privacy from others during this immensely difficult time in their lives.
We at Maple Leafs Daily hope that Jason Spezza's brother is at peace, and that the family takes all the time they need in one of their most difficult moments. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Jason, the entire Spezza family and any other friends and family of Matthew following his passing.
