Matt Petgrave officially arrested and charged with manslaughter over the tragic death of forward Adam Johnson
It has been just under 3 weeks since 29-year-old Adam Johnson was struck in the neck by the skate blade of Matt Petgrave in EIHL action and trageically died as a result of his injuries. Johnson, a member of the Nottingham Panthers, was cutting across the blueline when Petgrave, a member of the Sheffield Steelers, clipped him in the neck with his skate blade while off-balance, twisting in the air.
Following Johnson's tragic death, Petgrave was reportedly not handling the situation well, dealing with a tremendous amount of guilt and regret for the incident. Both Sheffield and Nottingham had shown public support for Petgrave, as neither side believed the act to be intentional. Now, the story has taken a wild turn.
Per BBC News, British Police have now arrested Petgrave and have officially charged him with manslaughter. Det Ch Supt Becs Horsfall, from South Yorkshire Police had this to say about the incident and Petgrave's arrest:
"We have been carrying out extensive inquiries to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances. We have been speaking to highly specialized experts in their field to assist in our inquiries and continue to work closely with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our ongoing investigation.
Adam's death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world. She urged members of the public to refrain from 'comment and speculation which could hinder' the police investigation."
This information is still very new and more details are sure to come up throughout the day and the remainder of the week.
