This past weekend, ahead of their first pre-season game of the year against the Ottawa Senators, the Toronto Maple Leafs aired a touching tribute for the Gaudreau brothers after both young men tragically lost their lives after being hit by a drunk driver while out cycling the evening before their sister's wedding.
Over the last month, the showing of support for the Gaudreau family has been vast as they endure two of the most unfathomable losses they'll ever face. The incident has left wives without their husbands, children without their fathers, sisters without their brothers and parents without their sons. It's been a truly heartbreaking story to follow.
In an attempt to use his position to influence Guy Gaudreau's life in a positive way, Flyers coach John Tortorella did his best to shine a little light on the Gaudreau family by offering to have Guy attend Flyers training camp this week. The gesture was unexpected, but Gaudreau, a hockey coach himself, was honoured to accept, attending camp recently to join the Flyers' coaching staff in helping to prepare the team for the 2024-25 season. NBC Philly shared the story on social media on Monday.
Tortorella has a reputation as being a bit of a hard-nosed coach with a short fuse, but fans are seeing him in an entirely different light after his recent gesture of good will, which showcased his heart and the love and respect he has for the Gaudreau family and the hockey community.
Kudos to Torts for this one. A pure class act, and the veteran bench boss also publicly declared his interest in bringing Gaudreau back to Flyers camp for some additional sessions to help distract the grieving father in a positive way. This is the kind of story you absolutely love to see in light of such a horrible event.
