Maple Leafs and hockey coverage in Canada could be about to change in a major way with Bell making TSN available for sale to the highest bidder.

How many Toronto Maple Leafs hockey games do you watch on TSN in the run of a season? Whatever the number, it may be about to change with a huge report coming out of Toronto.

According to Jonah Sigel of YYZ Sports Media, a major change is on the horizon for the Canadian sports media landscape as Bell has put TSN up for sale.

"This isn't just idle speculation - it's part of what many consider to be a a larger strategic shift at Bell, which has already announced plans to divest its MLSE (which owns the Toronto Maple Leafs) shares."

Sigel adds there are no potential buyers just yet, but the move is logical as TSN has issues keeping up with other sports networks.

"TSN, despite its strong brand recognition, faces increasing challenges in the current media landscape. Rights fees continue to escalate while traditional subscription revenues decline.

The NHL national rights loss to Rogers in 2013 marked a significant shift, and while TSN has maintained regional rights and other properties, the economics of sports broadcasting have fundamentally changed."

If it happens, there's no guarantee TSN would remain a broadcaster of Toronto Maple Leafs, or any other sports teams' games. It would mark a major moment in hockey broadcasting history in this country.

In other sad news for Leafs fans, Sigel also reports that The FAN 590, which is heavy on the Maple Leafs and other Toronto sports teams, is in danger of closing its doors or undergoing a complete reformatting.

"Sources suggest the station, once the flagship of Canadian sports radio, could be shuttered in favor of an all-podcast format.

The transformation is already evident - programming has been significantly cut, with only 'The Real Kyper Show' generating meaningful audience numbers."

As for who would scoop up TSN's assets, a streaming service would be the obvious answer as that seems to be the way everything is going when it comes to TV.
