Just a couple of short days ago, a rumour had surfaced that this was coming, and that Kuznetsov would have the opportunity to sign a 4-year deal back home in the KHL. However, shortly after the rumour had dropped, Kuznetsov's agent issued a statement, debunking that rumour, affirming that no decisions had been made.
Obviously, there was some fuel added to the fire when the Hurricanes had placed Kuznetsov on waivers on Wednesday. Now, with the veteran pivot having cleared, he is free to sign with whichever team he pleases.
Kuznetsov has had his fair share of problems off of the ice, and has even been suspended by the Washington Capitals multiple times in the past.
The skill is undeniable. Kuznetsov is a player with a lot of talent, but unfortunately, he just hasn't been able to adhere to the rules and a change of scenery has proven difficult to come by with NHL franchises trying to avoid a PR nightmare.
It will be interesting to see how this one develops, but it wouldn't be shocking to see Kuznetsov land back in the KHL in the coming days.
