With a goal and an assist against the Islanders on Monday, Tavares became just the 98th player to record 1,000 career points, but what's even more special is that he got to do it in front of his father, Joe.
Tavares told the media on Monday that his dad didn't have the opportunity to watch him play a lot growing up. Tavares revealed that Joe was always working, but he was thankful that his dad did so, to allow him to play the game he loved to play.
While Joe didn't get to see his son play a lot growing up, he's seen him plenty since - and most importantly, he was in the building on the annual Leafs' dads trip to watch his son tally point number 1,000 against the team who drafted him 1st overall back in 2009. His reaction to watching his son notch that 1000th point was truly special.
Tavares describes his father as a calm, stoic individual who takes awhile to open up, but it took him absolutely no time at all to jump up and celebrate his son's incredible accomplishment with all of the other Leaf dads in attendance. A proud moment for the Leafs captain's old man, to be sure.
With his 1,000th point now officially in the bank, the next goal for Tavares before his time officially winds down in the NHL is to win himself a Stanley Cup. I'm sure John would love to have the opportunity to share a day with the Stanley Cup with his dad before he hangs up his skates.
