Major update on an ex-Leafs goaltender following career-threatening diagnosis
It has been a trying year for former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen, who was diagnosed with a potentially career-threatening blood clotting issue back in November. Thankfully, doctors caught the issue and began treatment with Andersen immediately.
After ruling Andersen out indefinitely in November, we haven't heard much from the Carolina Hurricanes, other than the confirmation that Andersen had resumed skating. It was unclear, until this point, what the future may hold for the veteran netminder. However, on Wednesday, the Canes provided a huge update on the ex-Leaf.
"In November, Frederik Andersen was diagnosed with a deep-vein thrombosis and subsequent pulmonary embolisms. He has been on anti-coagulation medication since that time, and working with a team of experts to obtain medical opinions as to how he can return to playing safely. Frederik has resumed off-ice activities without complication and will now begin limited on-ice conditioning. We will provide additional updates as the process continues to progress." - Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell on Frederik Andersen
Andersen himself had been very quiet regarding his diagnosis and his condition throughout the year, but on Wednesday, he also spoke about the opportunity to continue his career following his recovery.
"I am thrilled that I'm a step closer to joining my teammates and competing on the ice. I feel grateful for the help and support I've received from my family and doctors, as well as the entire Hurricanes organization." - Andersen on his recovery
This is obviously huge for both Andersen and the Canes. Andersen has been limited to just 6 games for Carolina this season, posting a 4-1-0 record to go along with a 2.87 GAA and a .894 SV%. When you look at his career averages, he's posted a 2.58 GAA throughout his career, with a .915 SV%, so it's clear that his ailment was getting the best of him early on this season. It will be interesting to see how Andersen handles himself coming back this season after having missed so much time.
