A big subtraction on the Leafs' coaching staff could be coming as one coach looks to advance in his career
At the beginning of the 2021-2022 season, the Leafs added Spencer Carbery to their coaching staff as an Assistant Coach. Carbery was coming off of an AHL Championship as the Head Coach of the Hershey Bears. His main duty was to help turn around the Leafs' often struggling powerplay and over the past two seasons he has done a tremendeous job of that as the Leafs have had a very dominant powerplay. The issue for Carbery and the Leafs is that the powerplay has struggled in the playoffs when it is needed most. The Buds have had a lot less powerplay opportunities in the postseason, which is a part of the reason behind the drop off, but they also have failed to convert in the opportunities they did get, which has become a concern.
With lots of uncertainty surrounding the roster, coaching staff and management already since the Leafs' season ended last week, it would appear that Carbery is likely to be headed elsewhere at some point. He was rumored to be the Washington Capitals' top choice for their head coaching vacancy and now Frank Seravalli has reported that he has also interviewed for the Anaheim Ducks' head coaching vacancy as well.
There was always going to be changes at some level for the Leafs this off-season, and not only is it going to be players, but it would seem that there will be at least one new face behind the bench come training camp. Could we possibly see a new "old" face behind the bench in some capacity with Jason Spezza? It would not come as a surprise, but we won't know much until Kyle Dubas' fate is revealed.
