All summer long there was talk of a resurgent season incoming for John Tavares. His goal totals took a dive last season, but he still managed to score nearly a point per game after spending last offseason recovering from a concussion. This year, Tavares had a healthy off season with a focus on improving his foot speed. We were all looking forward to seeing a rejuvenated Johnny T this season.

Everything was looking good for the Leafs Captain until the first week of training camp, when Tavares suffered an oblique injury. The original timeline had him missing the first few games of the regular season and possibly hitting LTIR. Now, it appears as though he could be close to returning and may even be ready for opening night.

On Monday, Tavares joined the team for practice wearing a regular jersey and taking part in team drills - a fairly good sign that he has recovered from his injury. Of course, until the Leafs have made the official announcement, Tavares will remain questionable for the Leafs' season opener in Montreal on Wednesday. Johnny Toronto hasn't yet closed the door on playing in Montreal though.

If Tavares is not good to go on Wednesday, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe confirms that the Leafs will play a man short.
