An intense Sheldon Keefe screams at Tyler Bertuzzi, others on the Leafs' bench
Last night during the Leafs/Panthers game, Sheldon Keefe was not having a good time, particularly following a first period in which his team was outshot 15-7 on home ice to begin the game.
The Leafs did eventually secure the win, albeit in controversial fashion, but during the 2nd period, Sheldon Keefe absolutely flipped his lid on his team, with Tyler Bertuzzi appearing to catch the brunt of his anger.
Keefe has not had a good start to his 2023-24 season after signing an extension this summer. It's possible that he feels as though guys aren't grasping their assignments and that it's a player issue, rather than turning the mirror on himself and trying to pinpoint any inefficiencies when it comes to coaching.
The Leafs are 11-6-3 to open the season and are currently sitting in a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. When you consider that the Leafs finished last year as a top-5 team in the league, it wouldn't be so farfetched to suggest that Keefe is indeed on the hot seat, even after signing a 1-year extension. Perhaps this outburst on the bench was because he's feeling the pressure from management to turn things around in short order. We can't be certain, but we do know that he was more heated and more animated than we're used to seeing him last night.
