BREAKING: Kyle Dubas reportedly makes his decision; it's not good news for Leaf fans
Well, Leafs Nation, we knew this day would come eventually, but I didn't think it would come so soon. As it turns out, according to trusted NHL Insider, Elliotte Friedman, Kyle Dubas does not appear to be returning as GM of the Leafs next season.
If you count yourself among those applauding this decision, I wouldn't be so hasty to celebrate. Dubas was not without his faults, but he did follow through on his promises to retain the core of this team, even while navigating through the tricky flat cap that the COVID pandemic cursed us with.
Dubas had alluded to the level of stress and the toll that the job had taken on he and his family during the Leafs' season-ending presser, but he did speak a lot about the future of the franchise, which had some believing that perhaps he would be back on a lengthy, lucrative extension. Well, now we know differently and there is a lot of uncertainty.
The one factor here that really stinks is that there is no clear upgrade available on the market, which means that the Leafs may just opt to promote someone internally. Obviously, with this information still so fresh, we'll have to wait for some additional info here, but I shutter to think about what this means for the immediate future of the team.
