The Penguins core is aging fast, but any year Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are on your roster is a year to go for it. According to Elliotte Friedman, that's exactly what Dubas is planning to do. Per a report from Friedman this morning, the Pens are pushing hard to acquire Erik Karlsson on Sunday. Adding Karlsson's services may just be the move that puts the Penguins back in the contenders group.
The deal, according to Friedman, would involve a third team for salary retention reasons or as a way of clearing some additional salary in case a player with a NMC or NTC does not wish to play in San Jose. As of this writing it's not clear who that team will be, but some have speculated that it may be Chicago. In classic Dubas fashion, we probably won't know the exact details of the trade until the team itself announces it.
