If you're like me, I'm sure you're wondering why George Parros even has a job in the league's office. We have seen time and time again the pure incompetence and inconsistency he displays while heading the Department of Player Safety, yet here we are still waiting for either a change to how the league deals with hits to the head or a change at the league offices to bring in someone who is capable of doing a better job of protecting the players.

Case in point, this hit during last night's Penguins/Avalanche game that saw veteran center Jeff Carter hit young superstar defenseman Cale Makar with a flyby head shot.

Yes, Carter is looking at the puck the whole time, but this isn't a new player deserving of the benefit of the doubt. This is a veteran player who has been around the league a long time who knows exactly where he is, exactly where the puck is and exactly where Makar is.

Makar is the type of player who always warrants the opposition's attention on the ice. He's not a guy you just lose in the play. Carter knew exactly what he was doing on this play, elevating the shoulder into the head and face of Makar. Thankfully, Makar only missed about 10 minutes of the game before returning.

The Department of Player Safety not suspending Carter for this hit is exactly what is wrong with the game as it stands. Players get away with far too much and superstar players - ELITE players - like Makar are not being protected nearly well enough, which brings me to this question; shouldn't a former STAR player be in the position, rather than a goon who used to hurt people for a living? Bring in a retired star - one who knows what these elite players deal with on a regular basis. Have someone in that position who actually cares about protecting the league's best players.

Enough of George Parros and his willful ignorance. Get someone in there who will actually do the job that Parros is getting paid not to do. Fix the problems to improve the overall quality of the product.

No disrespect to Jeff Carter with the career he's had. He has been an excellent player in the league for a long time, but this was a garbage hit and doesn't belong in the game. Parros should be ashamed of himself for not handling this one immediately.
