According to TSN's Chris Johnston, Leafs winger William Nylander played through Game 1 with a bad case of food poisoning after eating some sushi that didn't agree with him for lunch. Johnston reported on Wednesday morning that Nylander had been throwing up just before puck drop on Monday night.
Despite being under the weather, Nylander played 15:36 in the game, posting 4 shots, 1 hit, 1 shot block and nearly converted on a solid breakaway attempt, though he couldn't work his way onto the scoresheet.
Nylander was nearly a point-per-game player during the regular season, averaging almost 3 more minutes per night, (18:16) than the 15:36 he played on Monday. The 25-year-old finished the regular season with 34 goals and 46 assists for 80 points in 81 games, posting career highs in each of those 3 categories.
If Nylander is feeling better on Wednesday, he could be an absolute gamechanger for the Leafs. The fact that he didn't look any worse for the wear, battling all game despite being so ill, shows tremendous heart - something the skilled forward has been accused of lacking in recent years.
