Both sides of the argument have been heard. On one side, there are those who believe that Matthews, 6'3 and over 200lbs, should fight his own battles. On the other, there are those who believe that a 60-goal scorer has no business dropping his gloves with anyone, period.
Don Cherry has finally decided to weigh in on the discussion on his Grapevine podcast and he had a unique perspective on the whole thing. While, in a nutshell, Cherry believes that Matthews should not fight, he also placed the focus on the fact that Matthews may have escalated the whole thing by standing there, smirking as the chaos unfolded around him. If it were up to him, Matthews would have just skated away instead of flashing a cocky smirk at Konecny.
Cherry has some controversial takes. I think we all know that. This one doesn't seem to be all that controversial. It actually does make some sense if you think about it. If you have no intent to drop your gloves in a runaway game, why not just turn the other cheek and skate away, instead of having a pair of your guys risk injury as well?
