Ex-Leafs defenseman shares hilarious story about getting completely shafted by Tie Domi
At one time, Carlo Colaiacovo looked like he was going to be the future of the Toronto Maple Leafs blue line. He was selected 17th overall in the 2001 NHL draft and dominated at the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championships. Unfortunately, his career was completely derailed by a various injuries. In his 13-year NHL career, Colaiacovo never played more than 67 games in a single season. One of those injuries, a concussion, wound up losing the Toronto born-defenseman a brand new car.
At the start of the 2006-07 season, Colaiacovo was still rehabbing after a season ending concussion from the year before. During this time, he was away from the team. When he returned, the entire team had received new BMW X5 SUVs - everybody but him, that is.
As it turns out, Tie Domi was the one negotiating the sponsorship. Evidently, he forgot to include Colaiacovo because, well, Colaiacovo wasn't with the team while the sponsorship was being negotiated. Colaiacovo laughed about it on the show, but I can't imagine he was laughing too hard about it at the time. Talk about adding insult to injury!
