After Auston Matthews signed a 4-year extension that will see him earn $13.25M per season with the Leafs beginning in the 2024-25 season, social media went crazy with fans from other markets suggesting that the Matthews extension is far too rich for the most random reasons. One Habs fan took things to another level saying that Cole Caufield's new extension is better than Matthews'.
Caufield signed an 8-year deal last season that will see him earn $7.8M per season. The Habs fan suggested that Caufield is the superior player because he and the Habs have 3 playoff series wins to Matthews' 1 with the Leafs.
In Caufield's entry-level contract, he put up a total of 53 goals and 84 points in 123 games. In comparison, Matthews put up 111 goals and 205 points in 212 games. Yes, Matthews played more games but he had more goals in his first 3 seasons than Caufield had points and it wasn't even close.
This comparison might be one of the most obnoxious comparisons I've ever witnessed. Leave it to a Habs fan, though, to create that kind of baseless comparison.
