According to TSN Hockey, the federal government will be freezing Hockey Canada's funding effective immediately. Minister of Sport Pascale St-Onge said in an interview on Wednesday, that until the organization signs up with a new federal agency that has the authority to receive and investigate complaints of abuse and other inappropriate behaviour and issue sanctions as a result of their findings. Funds will remain frozen for Canada's premier hockey program until Hockey Canada puts pen to paper.
This punishment comes following a lengthy investigation into the sexual abuse case clouding Hockey Canada with allegations made by a woman who said she was sexually assaulted by eight Canadian Hockey League players in 2018, at least some of whom played for Canada's 2018 World Juniors team that won Gold.
This ongoing situation, and the details that come out, further highlight the discussion about the culture of youth/junior hockey and the severe changes that need to be implemented. Not just down the ladder of Hockey Canada, but throughout all youth and junior leagues/associations. Hopefully this will eventually lead to changes in hockey culture at all levels.
