Former Leaf wants to replace Sheldon Keefe with a Hall of Fame goaltender as head coach
As reports have surfaced that Brad Treliving and Sheldon Keefe have held talks about a potential contract extension, one former Leaf believes now is the time for change. That change he wants to see is bringing in a current QMJHL coach and Hockey Hall of Famer to replace Keefe.
On The JD Bunkis podcast today, Bunkis had former Leaf Kris Versteeg on to discuss the Leafs and one topic that was brought up was Sheldon Keefe. Versteeg said that he would make a change right now if he was able to and elaborated on who he would replace Keefe with.
"Patrick Roy... I would do it tomorrow. I would do it today. I'm not even kidding. When I watched him coach the game yesterday his team was dialed in. I think he's learned what he needs to do at the NHL level to be successful. I'm vouching for him. I want him here. I'm watching that game (Memorial Cup Final) and thinking why not the NHL? Maybe bring Simon Gagne with him to help him more on the offense. I start looking at that as a great fit." - Versteeg on who the Leafs should hire as the team's new head coach
Roy's Quebec Remparts just won the Memorial Cup while destroying the Seattle Thunderbirds in the process. Roy was previously the coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2013-16 where he compiled a 130-92-24 record until he was relieved of his duties by his former teammate and current Avs' GM Joe Sakic. Roy is currently the GM and Head Coach of the Remparts and it would likely take a lot to convince him to leave the Remparts, but as Versteeg alluded to, it might be more enticing if his Assistant Coach and fellow former NHLer Simon Gagne accompanied him.
