For a few weeks during the 2021-22 season, the Leafs had to turn to then Marlies goaltender Erik Källgren as their starter while Jack Campbell and Petr Mrazek both dealt with injuries. While he pitched a shutout and looked good in his first few games, it quickly became evident that the NHL was beyond his depth and he finished the season with a .888sv% over 14 games. Källgren played 10 games for the Leafs last season when Murray and Samsonov were struck by injury, but his .898sv% in those games cost him his job as Joseph Woll stepped in and easily outplayed him. The Leafs elected to let Källgren walk to free agency this summer.

The New Jersey Devils signed Källgren to a 1 year, $775,000 contract for this season and assigned him to their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. In today's game against his former Toronto Marlies, Källgren had just a little bit of trouble handling a bouncing puck, gifting his former teammate, Pontus Holmberg, the easiest goal of his career.

As a goalie myself, I feel for Källgren here. Sometimes the puck just betrays you and, well, things like this happen. I'm sure he'll be getting a few texts from his former Marlies teammates after this one, in fact, it may be best if he just shuts off his phone for the night.
