Former Leafs goaltender announces his retirement after 14 NHL seasons
As with everything, eventually all good things come to an end. For former Leafs netminder Jonathan Bernier, his 14-year NHL career was a wild ride that began in Los Angeles back in 2007-08 when he made his NHL debut. Now, 16 years later, after parts of 14 NHL seasons, the French-Canadian netminder has decided to officially hang up the pads at 35 years of age.
Bernier, who was acquired by the Leafs in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings back in the summer of 2013, played 3 seasons in Toronto from 2013 to 2016 before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks for a conditional draft pick. The move was made to make room for the newly-acquired Frederik Andersen in Toronto.
Bernier would go on to play one season in Anaheim, one season in Colorado, three seasons in Detroit and one season in New Jersey before calling it a career. He ends his NHL career with 403 games under his belt, a 165-163-40 record, a 2.78 GAA and a .912 SV%. His best season in Toronto came in his first year, when the Laval, PQ native went 26-19-7 with a 2.70 GAA and a .922 SV% across 55 appearances.
The 35-year-old issued the following statement on his personal Instagram account on Monday:
"After fourteen years, it's time for me to hang up the pads. I can't thank the Kings, Maple Leafs, Ducks, Avalanche , Red Wings and Devils enough for giving me the opportunity to play in the best league in the world and in front of the best fans in the game. There are no words to express my gratitude to everyone who has been part of my hockey journey since day one, without all of you I couldn't have done it.
To my lovely wife, kids and family, thank you for always being by my side through the ups and downs. You have always supported me and helped me achieve my childhood dream and be my biggest fans.
Now I'm heading into the next chapter of life - retirement."
All the best to Jonathan and his family in his retirement from the NHL. Nelson Mandela would be so proud!
