The Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche made a very surprising trade this afternoon. The Predators are sending Ryan Johansen to Colorado in exchange for former Leaf Alex Galchenyuk.

With the Avalanche losing Gabriel Landeskog for the entire upcoming season due to knee surgery, they had to bolster their top six and did so in acquiring Johansen. Johansen has 2 years left on his current deal that carries an AAV of $8M per season. The Predators will retain 50% of his cap hit over the final two seasons of his deal, giving both the Avs and Predators some cap flexibility.

Galchenyuk spent last season with the Avalanche's farm team where he put up 42 points in 42 games after recovering from an injury he suffered during Avalanche training camp. He will be a UFA on July 1st, so we're not exactly sure whether Nashville's intent is to extend him or allow him to walk.
